Om, also spelled as Aum, is a sacred sound and symbol in the Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist traditions, and is also used in yoga practices. In yoga, Om is considered to be the primordial sound, the sound of the universe, and the essence of all creation.

When reciting Om during yoga practice, it is believed to help calm the mind, increase focus, and connect with a higher consciousness. The vibration of the sound is said to have a calming effect on the nervous system and promote a sense of peace and harmony within the body and mind.

Om is often spelled in different ways depending on the language, tradition, and interpretation. Shown below are some of the different spellings and their meanings:

  • Om: This is the most commonly used spelling and is widely recognized in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and yoga traditions.
  • Aum: This spelling is often used in Hinduism and is considered to be the original and most accurate representation of the sound. The “A” represents the beginning of creation, the “U” represents the continuation, and the “M” represents the end or dissolution.
  • Ohm: This spelling is a popular variation of Om and is often used in Western culture. It is pronounced the same way as Om but is spelled with an “h” at the end.
  • Oṃ: This is the Devanagari script spelling of Om, which is used in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. The dot above the letter represents the sound of “ng” and the crescent shape below represents the sound of “a.”
